Immersive sensory play, creative process arts, daily outdoor play, and a loving study of the natural world are just a few more of the ways that we spend magical days together at Little Seeds Nest.

Rooted in Wonder

hands-on with science, nature, music, art & more

Our program is designed with sensory rich play at it’s heart, giving children the opportunity to integrate physical and mental learning through hands-on experiences. Whether they’re exploring textures, pouring water, or creating art - these activities help young learners build essential connections that support their development.

We also focus on instilling confidence by encouraging self-sufficiency in daily routines. From learning to pour their own water to tidying up after play, these small but meaningful moments help children gain a sense of accomplishment and independence.

Above all, our primary goal is to nurture social-emotional development. In a warm and encouraging environment like Little Seeds Nest, children practice skills like sharing, expressing emotions, and building positive relationships - essential foundations for success in school and life.

curriculum and philosophy

  • At Little Seeds Nest, our curriculum is rooted in the belief that young children learn best through hands-on exploration, play, and meaningful connections with their environment and each other. Inspired by a blend of play-based learning, sensory exploration, and nature-focused experiences, we aim to nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child.

    We prioritize:

    • Sensory play to stimulate learning and encourage exploration.

    • Outdoor experiences to build a connection to nature, promote physical activity, and inspire imaginative play.

    • Process-oriented creative arts to encourage self-expression without focusing on a "perfect" end result.

    • Self-sufficiency to help children build confidence, independence, and important life skills.

    • Social-emotional development through gentle guidance, helping children navigate their emotions, build friendships, and develop empathy.

Our program is designed to honor each child’s unique growth, fostering a joyful and supportive environment where they feel safe to explore, learn, and thrive at their own pace.

  • At Little Seeds Nest, we offer a variety of thoughtfully designed activities and learning experiences that support the natural development of toddlers while fostering curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Our program includes:

    • Sensory Play: Activities like water play, sand exploration, playdough, and tactile bins help children explore textures, sounds, and movement while developing fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.

    • Outdoor Play and Nature Exploration: Children spend significant time outdoors, engaging in open-ended play, gardening in our sensory gardens, building in the mud kitchen, and exploring natural materials under the dappled shade of our oak and fir trees.

    • Creative Arts: Process-focused art activities, like painting, collage, and nature-inspired crafts, encourage self-expression, creativity, and fine motor development without pressure to create a “perfect” product.

    • Movement and Music: We incorporate dance, rhythm, and music into daily activities to build gross motor skills, coordination, and a love for creative expression.

    • Self-Sufficiency Activities: Simple daily tasks, like pouring water, tidying toys, dressing for the weather, and helping with snack preparation, teach life skills and foster independence.

    • Social-Emotional Learning: Through group play, stories, and gentle guidance, we help children learn to identify their feelings, build friendships, and develop empathy and communication skills.

    • Storytelling and Language Exploration: Daily read-alouds, fingerplays, and songs promote language development, listening skills, and a love for storytelling.

These experiences are carefully balanced throughout the day, allowing children to engage in structured activities while also providing plenty of time for free play and quiet rest. By creating an environment full of wonder and possibility, we help children build a strong foundation for learning and growth.

  • Sensory play is a foundational part of early childhood development, engaging your child's senses—touch, sight, sound, smell, and movement—to build important cognitive, physical, and social-emotional skills. At Little Seeds Nest, we incorporate sensory activities like water play, sand exploration, playdough, and nature-based materials to support learning and growth in the following ways:

    • Cognitive Development: Sensory play helps children develop problem-solving skills, curiosity, and creativity as they explore textures, experiment with materials, and make discoveries about the world around them.

    • Fine and Gross Motor Skills: Manipulating sensory materials (e.g., pouring water, squishing dough, or sifting sand) strengthens hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, preparing little hands for future skills like writing, cutting, and dressing.

    • Language Development: As children describe what they’re experiencing—how something feels, looks, or sounds—they expand their vocabulary and learn to express themselves more clearly.

    • Emotional Regulation: Sensory play can be calming and therapeutic, helping children process big emotions, self-regulate, and find comfort in hands-on activities.

    • Social Skills: Engaging in group sensory activities teaches cooperation, sharing, and turn-taking while encouraging communication and teamwork.

    • Brain Development: Sensory experiences build neural connections in the brain, enhancing learning and memory through active, hands-on engagement.

By creating opportunities for sensory play, we foster a joyful, exploratory environment where your child can build confidence, curiosity, and essential skills—all through play that feels natural and fun.

  • Drawing on the lessons of many influential schools of progressive early childhood education, the LSN teachers believe that building self-sufficiency is key to developing confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment.

    We encourage self-sufficiency through:

    • Practical Life Skills: Simple, age-appropriate tasks like pouring their own water, tidying up toys, washing hands, and helping with snack preparation empower children to take responsibility for their environment and themselves.

    • Routines and Predictability: A consistent daily routine provides a sense of security and allows children to anticipate what comes next, helping them feel capable and in control of their day.

    • Encouragement of "I Can Do It": We gently guide children to try new tasks at their own pace, celebrating their efforts and achievements without pressure. This helps them take pride in their abilities and develop resilience when faced with challenges.

    • Self-Dressing for Outdoor Play: We encourage children to put on their own coats, boots, and hats, offering help as needed while fostering the skills they’ll need to care for themselves.

    • Problem-Solving Opportunities: Whether it’s figuring out how to balance blocks, complete a puzzle, or resolve a conflict with a friend, we encourage children to think through solutions and celebrate their successes.

    • Natural Exploration: Providing a safe, engaging environment where children can explore freely allows them to take small risks, make choices, and build confidence in their decision-making.

By giving children the tools, encouragement, and opportunities to practice independence, we help them develop a strong sense of confidence, autonomy, and a can-do spirit that supports their growth both at Little Seeds Nest and beyond.

  • How much outdoor time do children get each day?

At Little Seeds Nest, we are outside every day—rain or shine—for as much of our day as we can. We believe deeply in the positive influence of the natural environment on children’s holistic health, and research shows that outdoor play supports physical development, creativity, emotional well-being, and overall resilience in young children.

Our outdoor activities are as rich and varied as the seasons themselves. Children engage in organic art projects using natural materials like clay, plant pigments, and found items. They play in our mud kitchen with sensory-rich plants from our school gardens, tend and harvest fruits and vegetables from our organic garden beds, and gather as a class to cook with their bounty.

From imaginative play under the oak trees to hands-on exploration in the sensory gardens, our outdoor time fosters curiosity, creativity, and connection to the world around us—and that’s just the beginning!

  • Process-oriented creative art focuses on the experience of creating rather than the final product. At Little Seeds Nest, we encourage children to explore materials, medium, and techniques freely, without expectations or influence to make anything specific.

This approach is important because it:

    • Fosters creativity: Children are free to experiment, imagine, and express themselves in their own unique way.

    • Builds confidence: By celebrating the process, children feel proud of their efforts rather than judged by the outcome.

    • Develops fine motor skills: Activities like painting, sculpting, and working with natural materials strengthen hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

    • Encourages problem-solving: Children learn to think critically as they explore new tools, techniques, and ideas.

In our program, process-oriented art is often inspired by the natural world, whether it’s creating plant-based paints, sculpting with clay, or incorporating treasures from nature into their work. This fosters a joyful sense of discovery and allows children to see art as a meaningful, open-ended experience.

Health and Safety

  • As a Certified Early Education Program through the State of Oregon, we adhere to an enhanced level of health and safety standards, including regular inspections, detailed record-keeping, and ongoing professional development for our educators. This certification reflects our commitment to providing a safe, clean, and nurturing environment for your child.

Our health and safety measures include:

    • Emphasis on developing regular and proper handwashing routines for children, teaching them the importance of hygiene through consistent practice and gentle guidance.

    • A daily, detailed cleaning program designed in consultation with Oregon-licensed Health and Sanitation specialists. This includes the use of measured and time-limited sanitizing solutions and rigorous cleaning regimens for all surfaces, toys, and materials.

    • Sanitized and regularly rotated materials to reduce the risk of germ transmission while maintaining an engaging learning environment.

    • Clear illness policies to help keep our community healthy, with guidelines for when children should stay home and return to care.

    • Vaccine Requirements: We require all children to be up to date on the recommended vaccines from the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC). Families can learn more about Oregon’s immunization requirements here.

We take community health in early childhood very seriously, recognizing its vital role in protecting the well-being of each child and their families. By upholding these high standards, we ensure that Little Seeds Nest remains a safe, healthy space where children can thrive.

  • Potty training is not required for children to start at Little Seeds Nest. We are highly experienced in supporting families through this process and work closely with parents to develop a consistent plan between home and preschool that makes children feel comfortable and confident when they are ready to train.

Our approach follows a 100% positive reinforcement and zero-pressure policy, which has helped many children successfully transition out of diapers at their own pace. We believe in celebrating progress, encouraging independence, and ensuring the process feels natural and stress-free for each child.

Parents simply need to maintain a supply of clean disposable diapers (we are not set up for cloth diapers at this time) until their child has completed potty training. We’re here to provide guidance, support, and a nurturing environment to help your child succeed when they’re ready.

  • All children in our full-day program will have a daily nap period after lunch. This is an important time for children to regulate their energy and attention, even if they no longer fall asleep during naps.

Nap times and guidelines are standardized for all Certified Childcare programs (such as LSN) by the State of Oregon.

Students rest or nap on comfortable cots in a lightly darkened room with gentle music playing to create a calm, soothing environment. Teachers provide constant supervision throughout this period to ensure every child feels safe, comfortable, and relaxed. Whether they nap or simply rest, this quiet time helps children recharge and stay engaged for the remainder of the day.
